CrPC Section-156 - Police officer's power to investigate cognizable cases

Description

  • Authority of Police Officers

    • The officer in charge of a police station may investigate any cognizable case within the jurisdiction of the local Court, without requiring prior approval from a Magistrate, as per the provisions of Chapter XIII.
  • Validity of Investigation

    • No proceedings initiated by a police officer in such cases shall be challenged at any stage on the ground of lack of authority to investigate under this section.
  • Magistrate’s Power to Order Investigation

    • A Magistrate empowered under Section 190 may also direct an investigation into a cognizable offence, as outlined above.
